In Episode 6 of Inside the Mind, I sit down with Rodrigo Pessoa, whose career speaks for itself. Seven Olympic Games, three World Cup titles, and more than 70 Grand Prix wins.
But this conversation is not about the wins.
Rodrigo speaks about Sydney 2000, and a moment that could have completely changed the way he saw himself. Three refusals in the Olympic individual final, millions watching, and a horse he knew had done everything right. There was no easy explanation, and no way to undo it.
What stands out is what happened after. Rodrigo made a decision that this would not be the end of his story. He found a way to come back, to dig deeper, and to allow the setback to shape him rather than define him.
Later, as Chef d’Equipe for Team Ireland, he saw something important in the riders he was working with. The missing piece was not technical. It was mental. That is why one of the first things he did was bring in a mental coach.
Rodrigo’s story is a firm display of the pressure being a part of the sport. Everyone feels nerves. Everyone faces moments that test them. The difference is not whether those moments come, but how we learn to handle ourselves when they do.
